American Estates: Alex Florov Smooth Fish with Boxwood (Slonim) (2018) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-009-13140
The Fish shape is a Danish design most associated with Lars Ivarsson and Jess Chonowitsch. Not to be confused with the Blowfish, the Fish design is characterized by a flaring, teardrop shank and a rounded bowl that can vary from Apple to Egg. The teardrop shank creates a ridgeline through one flank, and artisans will take creative liberties with that cue, either terminating the ridge at the transition, or continuing it to the rim, or gradually causing it to dissipate up the bowl. In this rendition from Alex Florov, the Russian-born carver maintains the line's firmness all the way to the rim, beautifully creating a frame for the bowl in profile, which cants dramatically forward. A common theme in Lars' Fish designs was to elongate the shank, and Alex has leaned slightly toward that aesthetic, but not to a strong degree. Still, the dramatic flare of the shank rivals the bowl in regard to visual weight, drawing focus to the boxwood accent covering the shank face. Dressed in an auburn contrast stain, the grain is immaculate and perfectly corresponds to the shaping, the grain and form combining well enough to have earned Florov's highest Slonim grade.
