American Estates: Rolando Negoita Smooth Bent Egg (2010)
Product Number: 004-009-14737
Rolando Negoita is a wonderfully inventive pipe maker, consistently surprising us over the years and always pushing the boundaries, which is readily evident with this offering. Particularly impressive is the fact this piece sits on the flattened foot that extends from the front of the bowl and the bottom of the Egg-shaped bowl itself, is another great example of Rolando's inclination to play with forms and ideas, yielding beautifully unique results. As an artist, he asks us "what is a pipe?" and as a craftsman, he delivers surprising, novel visual ideas in a package that is most pipe-like.
I think I'm fond of this composition for a few reasons, but primarily because it's playfulness is delightful. It feels like Rolando is engaging in friendly discourse with the holder of this pipe. It's impossible not to see Rolando's quiet, ironic sense of humor at work here. Rolando eschews the "artist" appellation, but the sort of postmodern creativity that his work displays belies his disinclination to be labeled as such. All too rarely, iconoclastic works of modernist and postmodernist art that challenge us are attractive. All too often, they're art only in the sense that they're not art: in the sense that they're challenging without being innately attractive. Rolando has capably managed to keep this challenging and also beautiful, charming, and whimsical.- Sykes Wilford
