American Estates: J. Alan Smooth Tomato (517) (2011) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-009-14828
A gestural, forward-urging Tomato from Jeff Gracik of J. Alan pipes, this piece immediately captured my attention thanks to the remarkably tight grain that surrounds the bowl's bulging flanks and the warm, rich contrast stain that elevates the impressive grain patterns. Behind the broad, plump bowl, the shank rises gently upwards, exhibiting a gradual flare from the transition towards the mouthpiece that's handled brilliantly. Following the shank end is one of Jeff's incredibly comfortable saddle stems, displaying a slight downturn to counterbalance the bowl's forward cant. Gracik rarely makes tapered mouthpieces, feeling himself, and learning from his customers, that saddle bits are preferential. It suits this organic composition wonderfully, offering terrific balance and will provide a stellar smoking experience any time tobacco is ignited within the chubby bowl. This particular piece was notably featured in the 2011 summer issue of Pipes and tobaccos magazine and remains unsmoked.- Jeffery Sitts
