American Estates: Abe Herbaugh Partially Sandblasted Mushroom (2019)
Product Number: 004-009-18068
Pioneered by Danish master Jess Chonowitsch, the Mushroom design has been reinterpreted by various artisans throughout the pipe making world. Abe Herbaugh has rendered several iterations over the years, with some hewing closely to Chonowitsch's archetype and others offering slightly differing cues. This particular number trades Jess's more upward curling transition for one that's more Horn-like, the shank flaring gradually and consistently into the forward-urging bowl. The rim, then, boasts the shape's conventional, domed cap, smooth-stained here to contrast the rest of the stummel's dark sandblast. Herbaugh has gone a step further, though, slightly off-setting the rim's defining ridgeline for a subtle, whimsical dose of asymmetry that's echoed by a kiss of plateau just to the left of the chamber. Gorgeous work from the Vermont-based carver, it's a beautifully-executed take on the Danish design yet still very much imbued with Abe's personal style and organic-inclined aesthetic.-Truett Smith
