American Estates: Adam Davidson Smooth Freehand with Bamboo (2007)
Product Number: 004-009-18084
I was surprised to learn that this 2007 piece from Adam Davidson was fashioned during the American artisan's first year making pipes. He's always liked and remembered this design, and it's an impressive composition for someone's first year involved in the craft — particularly considering the skill required to add bamboo. The shape is sleek and forward-urging, with the rim raising slightly. It resembles a squat Dublin in profile, but from above, the bowl is quite compressed at the flanks and tapers forward like a spearhead. Flamed grain is evident underneath the tasteful stain, whose palette remains light enough to complement the bamboo.
