American Estates: Todd Johnson Smooth Tomato (Hoplite) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-009-14978
Todd Johnson is a prominent figure in American pipe craftsmanship, both as co-founder of BriarWorks and for his own artisan creations. With a vast portfolio drawing inspiration from Danish masters, it's a bit surprising to me we have not seen more Tomato shapes from him, but even if it was one of his more often-produced shapes, I doubt we would see any as smooth as this smooth rendition. One of just a handful of smooth Tomatoes he has ever sent us, this one is broad and round when seen from above and displays continually curving flanks that make me think of a UFO in flight.
The sleek presentation enables striking flame grain and dense concentrations of birdseye to be presented in resplendent detail, grain made all the more handsome by a honey-colored stain and the smooth finish. Gradual curvature is visible in the transition, the briar flowing softy down to a rounded, arrow-straight shank. A ruby-hued ring crowns the shank, while one of Johnson's hand-cut saddle stems, this one made of swirls of different colored vulcanite, turns down slightly to promote a comfortable smoke. A unique offering from a storied American artisan, somehow still unsmoked, this pipe is highly collectible and will take a prized position in a discerning collector's rotation.- Joel Balyeat
