American Estates: Alex Florov Smooth Reverse Calabash (Slonim) (2012)

Product Number: 004-009-15612

The first Reverse Calabash I've seen from the immensely talented Alex Florov, this wasp-waisted piece offers a shank as visually dominant as the bowl. The transition is among this pipe's most important elements, dividing the shank and bowl in a smooth transfer of visual weight with soft curvature and tightly precise arcs. The bowl is tightly grained with generous plateau at the rim, while the shank expands into the Reverse-Calabash expansion necessary to house the chamber within. The stem is colored like cumberland, but with more tightly whorled patterning than is typically found, and it's saddle configuration is modified with smooth tapering to the crisp lip button. This is a pipe that will perform like a Calabash, but with a disposition unlike the classic Calabashes we know.
