American Estates: Abe Herbaugh Smooth Freehand (2017)
Product Number: 004-009-15752
While the bowl of this Freehand from Abe Herbaugh most closely resembles the Egg shape, the overall form combines aspects of several other designs. Most specifically, the transition is wrapped by a crisp ridgeline, clearly inspired by Lars Ivarsson's iconic Cup and Ball motif, though not fitted to an elongated shank or dressed in a dual finish in this rendition from Abe. Furthermore, the overall gesture of the profile emulates the Horn's forward stance — the bowl canted and easing gradually from the shank. On the opposite end, the shank flares toward the stem, and it's all dressed in a dark, ruby-tinged contrast stain, revealing a stunning array of cross grain that makes me glad it's dressed in a completely smooth finish.-Truett Smith
