American Estates: Rad Davis Smooth Tomato with Masur Birch (2013)

Product Number: 004-009-15835

Fascinated by pipes since the 1970s, Rad Davis continuously collected and smoked pipes while working as a fly fishing guide in Montana. In need of a pipe repair, Rad turned to Mark Tinsky who was also an avid fly fisherman and the two eventually met, with Tinsky showing Davis around his workshop and inspiring Rad to carve pipes of his own. Though he's now retired, Rad Davis left behind quite a legacy with the estate market being the only place to obtain one of his creations, like this hearty, robust Tomato. It's a strongly gestural piece with the affably plump and rounded bowl urging forward from the transition, balanced by the gracefully bent shank-and-stem combination. Tight streaks of vertical grain surround the bowl's bulging flanks while a band of masur birch adorns the base of the cumberland mouthpiece, adding even more warmth to the overall color palette.
