American Estates: Adam Davidson Sandblasted Almond with Boxwood (2016) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-009-15975
Organically inspired designs are familiar forms from Adam Davidson, with the American artisan's signature Fig, Figu, and Almond shapes readily coming to mind. This particular Almond from 2016 has somehow remained unsmoked but is an excellent example of Davidson's skills, primarily his ability to imbue compact pieces with plenty of substance. Measuring just over four-and-a-half inches, it's slightly longer than a typical Nosewarmer though the bowl offers a capacious chamber and a powerful presence in hand. The sandblasted finish was perfect for this shape as undulating waves of grain rise up from the protruding heel and climb the bowl's compressed flanks toward the lens-shaped rim. Accenting the shank end is a pale boxwood ferrule, its slightly domed shape complementing the base of the saddle stem as well as the lines of the bowl's silhouette. Whether you've been collecting Adam's work for years and have been waiting for a special piece to come around or if you're considering your first Davidson pipe, this Almond is too tempting to pass up.- Jeffery Sitts
