American Estates: Charles Cole Smooth Freehand (2209) (2009)
Product Number: 004-009-16008
Charles Cole spent most of his childhood working in his family's tobacco fields, which is where his love for pipes and tobacco gradually developed. It was physically demanding work of course, but Cole loved it and he pours that same effort and dedication into crafting exquisite artisan pipes. This dynamic Freehand design was clearly shaped with the briar's grain orientation in mind, with the stummel's crisp ridges framing the the gorgeous grain that streaks across the wide flanks. The smooth flowing transition is Horn-like in its curvature, sweeping upward to join the wide rim while the shank's middle is cinched, adding a whimsical touch to the profile. The expansion disc along the base of the cumberland stem echoes the shank-end's flare, before gradually tapering toward the thin, comfortably shaped lip button.- Jeffery Sitts
