American Estates: J. Alan Smooth Dublin with Horn (1404) (2018) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-009-16017
In this Dublin from Jeff Gracik, the American carver takes cues from Danish masters and their approach to classic designs to offer a form that's compact and muscular yet quite flowing and dynamic. It's no secret that Jeff draws much of his influence from Jess Chonowitsch, and that's evident in this piece, though Jeff has riffed off of Chonowitsch's conventions to make this piece thoroughly his own. The bowl here is taller and heartier than what Jess would render, oriented at a slight forward cant and topped with a gently inflated rim. Said bowl transitions effortlessly to the shank which perfectly matches the robust precedent established by the bowl. Further accentuating the piece's Danish aesthetic, Jeff has accented the shank with a creamy horn mount before giving way to a sleek saddle stem. And while the shaping is certainly impressive, the grain here is simply sublime — the tight streaks of flame grain gorgeously highlighted by a vibrant contrast stain. It's still in excellent condition and is an incredible homage to one of Gracik's biggest influences.- Jeffery Sitts
