American Estates: Jack Howell Passion for Pipes Limited Edition Sandblasted Rhodesian (13) (2011)

Product Number: 004-009-16059

Jack Howell tends towards robust, classically shaped pipes, and this hearty Rhodesian is certainly no exception. This particular piece from 2011 was notably made for a special subscription series commissioned by pipe collector and author Neill Archer Roan. Very few pipe enthusiasts are as well-versed on the history of Comoy's pipes than author and blogger Neill Archer Roan. In addition to having written a book on the historic marque, he also runs the blog A Passion for Pipes and is an ardent enthusiast of the full-bodied, affable shapes that made Comoy's a respected name in English pipe making.

This specific design nods to Comoy's iconic "283" shape. Like all Rhodesians, the "283" features a round shank paired to a beadlined, Bulldog bowl; however, what makes Comoy's design markedly special is the added mass lent to the shank and transition. Such shaping on this tribute forces the beadlines to be higher set, making the rim's taper more pronounced. The undulating grain is spectacular on this example, creeping up the bowl's heel toward the deep beadlines that encircle the bowl's broad waistline.
