American Estates: Thomas James Sandblasted Fish (2014) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-009-16172
A carver whose eclectic style takes him from neoclassic Italian designs, like the Hawkbill, to Danish classics, such as this Fish, Thomas James is one versatile pipe maker. Here, the American artisan pairs a rotund, Tomato-like bowl on the end of a teardrop shank, connected via a crisp transition and the shank's characteristic ridgeline sweeping up the bowl all the way to the rim. Though the shaping cues here are definitely Danish-inspired, the execution comes across as rather American — the added muscularity of the shank and transition, the simplistic shaping of the bowl (no chamfer to the rim, nor it being smooth), and the supple, pumice-like sandblast lending this piece the look of many a pipe coming out of the American school. Unsmoked.-Truett Smith
