American Estates: J. Alan Smooth Blowfish (1411) (2018) (Unsmoked) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-009-16356
Jeff Gracik of J. Alan Pipes produces a variety of Blowfish shapes, some taller with softer linework and some longer and leaner, such as his Fugu, often with well-defined panels and linework. This one is especially stunning, with flanks a bit more bulbous than its cousins, and a relatively compressed height. The trim dimensions leave little room for error when it comes to wrangling the desired shape from the briar, but Jeff has pulled it off with rare skill, placing the ridgelines and curves at just the right place in the block to fully accentuate tight striations of cross grain and stunning fields of dense birdseye.
Quite glorious, the briar is illuminated by a smooth finish and bright auburn stain. It's so lively I wonder if this fish might swim right out of my hand, and it appears poised to do so, with the wrapping ridgelines all transitioning seamlessly to a shank that flares to an angled face of plateau, quite like a fishtail sweeping through the water. The base of the vulcanite stem mirrors the briar face, melding the two with an organic agreement before reducing to a lithe saddle configuration, curling gently downward toward one of Jeff's hand-cut lip buttons. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better composition of angle, curve grain, and finish in any pipe, securing once again Gracik's worldwide reputation for fine smokers.- Joel Balyeat
