American Estates: J. Alan Smooth Lumberman with Silver (Pipes and Tobaccos Pipe of the Year) (04/30) (2011) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-009-16427
Fashioned back in 2011 for Pipes and tobaccos magazine's Pipe of the Year, this Lumberman from Jeff Gracik of J. Alan pipes is quite an impressive piece, and one of only 30 created for the occasion. As can be expected, it draws a great deal of inspiration from the Danish school, with a soft bit of lift to the heel in profile, along with a fair bit of curve-laden shaping. The compressed shank-and-stem combination work to emphasize the bowl's visual weight in profile, and the flame grain surrounds the bowl in natural character, drawing the eye upward to the softly inflated rim. This series was the first time Jeff used silver, and he certainly displayed his prowess immediately. Miraculously, this piece is still unsmoked.- Chuck Stanion
