American Estates: Abe Herbaugh Smooth Mushroom (2017) Tobacco Pipe

Popularized by Danish carver Jess Chonowitsch, the Mushroom pipe design has since undergone many interpretations from a number of artisans. This piece from Abe Herbaugh displays the shape's domed, broad rim with a patch of plateau on the taller, right side and an encircling, demarcating ridgeline lending a bit of structure. The effect is that the cap is sloping downward toward the left flank for a bit of playful shaping. The bowl tapers through the heel, then sweeps upward through the rising shank, where it's met by a stylish, ebony-hued saddle stem, the profile Horn-like and organic in its curling gesture. It's dressed in a warm auburn stain, with stunning wisps of flame grain ascending to the rim, which is freckled with birdseye. This is a wonderful rendition of the Mushroom design from the talented American carver.
