American Estates: Jody Davis Sandblasted Bent Dublin (Friar) (C06) (15) (2006) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-009-16523
One of my favorite personal pipes is a Jody Davis, and, like this flowing Dublin, it wears a dark stain and stimulating sandblast to accentuate excellent ring grain. One of the first new-wave American artisans, Jody began making pipes for himself while on tour as a musician with the Newsboys, becoming so skilled in the process that his work is now in demand worldwide.
This rendition displays an extra-inflated rim rife with blasted birdseye, and a flowing, gestural profile with a certain implied momentum about it. The all-dark briar is accented by a lighter hardwood accent at the shank end, providing crisp visual and physical separation from the jet-black vulcanite saddle stem. I am a huge fan of Jody's hand shaping around the lip button, and that skill is well represented here, offering a comfortable perch between the teeth and a hand-funneled airway.
