American Estates: Brian Ruthenberg Smooth Poker with Silver (XL) (2006) (Unsmoked) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-009-16534
Prior to becoming a pipe maker, Brian Ruthenberg was a truck driver and used his background as a toolmaker and machinist to help him become a talented carver. He was forced to retire a few years ago when he developed an allergy to briar dust that set off other respiratory issues. This creation is an impressively tall Poker rendition, with a bowl standing over two-and-a-half inches in height, dressed in a walnut stain that accentuates tight striations of upswept flame grain. It flares a bit on the way upward, lending an organic aesthetic, and the shank and stem taper and curl slightly downward like a living tree branch. An engraved band of silver at the shank end adds just the right amount of contrast, setting off nicely the deep Cumberland hues of the vulcanite stem.- Joel Balyeat
