American Estates: Ernie Markle Smooth Bent Dublin
Product Number: 004-009-16625
A decidedly more squat take on the bent Dublin, this offering from Ernie Markle proudly displays the American carver's penchant for robust styling as well as his adept skills at shaping and finishing. While this piece certainly features a sense of stoutness — from its broad and thick oval shank to the wide splayed rim — it is, at the same time, also imbued with an elegant grace rarely seen in similarly robust pieces. Such grace is apparent in the tight transition, how the underside sweeps smoothly from shank-end to rim, and in the rim's rounded nature. While many carvers would be content with either a perfectly flat or symmetrically inflated rim, Ernie has taken the creative liberty of gradually enlarging the rim from aft to fore, creating a wavy disposition that gives this piece a thoroughly unique profile. For the cherry on top, Markle offers us an absolutely gorgeous array of grain: Tongues of flame grain on the flanks align with the bowl's forward-urging orientation while a forest of birdseye saturates the undulating rim. There's nothing to dislike about this piece, and it offers even more than what one could hope for. Very well done.-Truett Smith
