American Estates: Tom Cook Smooth Bent Dublin (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-009-16721
Displaying an undulating, plateau-crowned rim that favors the aft more than the fore, this bent Dublin from Tom Cook is a robust take on the shape, with a tall bowl, firm heel, and muscular transition. The lightly flaring shank adds considerable length to the design before giving way to an abbreviated tapered stem of semi-translucent, dark amber, making a subtle downturn. The backwards cant of the bowl paired with the stem's downturn lends the totality of the piece a dynamic, curling aesthetic not often seen in pipe making, as the shape seems to fold into itself. The stummel wears a handsome, traditional smooth finish that encapsulates the hair-like strands of flame grain flowing from the rim to the rim on all sides of the bowl. It's a hearty, boldly rendered piece that can't help but charm, and it should make a welcome addition to any collector's rotation, especially those with a keen appreciation for artisanal designs.--Davin Hylton
