American Estates: Bertram Smooth Acorn (40) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-009-16822
The Bertram Pipe Shop was established in Washington, D.C. in 1927 by Sydney Betram Goldmann, the son of a German immigrant and pipe maker. The shop, in part due to its location, boasted a following of politicians and renowned world leaders, including the likes of Edward G. Robinson, Franklin Roosevelt, Joseph Stalin, Red Skeleton, and General MacArthur. Unfortunately, the shop burned down during the riots that occurred after the assassination of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1960s, and the historic shop never recovered, closing its doors soon after. This smooth Acorn possesses a deep sense of history and a classical form. The softly rounded bowl, with it's flared rim and subtle taper, possesses a bulbous disposition, pairing well to the low-slung shank-and-stem combination. The stummel wears a dark chestnut smooth finish that accentuates some gorgeous birdseye across one flank and winds-swept flame grain across the other. Lightweight and sleek, this vintage piece is a refined example of American craftsmanship.--Davin Hylton
