American Estates: Thomas James Rusticated Egg (2012) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-009-18210
Before becoming a pipe maker, Thomas James restored vintage Corvettes, but after seeing an magazine ad for a briar kit, he became interested in pipes and tried fashioning one for himself. James has been crafting pipes ever since, and this Egg is a fine example of his style, showcasing the American carver's penchant for robust proportions and muscular shaping cues. The bowl here is colossal, filling the palm with substance and housing a chamber over two inches deep, ensuring plenty of long, leisurely smoking sessions. The shank and stem keep the form sleek in profile while lending the bowl most of the visual weight within the composition. A crisp, dark rustication dresses the stummel and provides plenty of tactile feedback for the fingers to explore, while a band of hardwood around the shank end adds a touch of vibrancy to the pipe's otherwise reserved color palette.--Davin Hylton
