American Estates: Brian Ruthenberg Sandblasted Tomato (Caliper) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-009-18396

Try as I might, I cannot seem to find any evidence that indicates that Brian Ruthenberg is still active in the artisan pipe craft, though there is much to suggest that he is retired: something that is an absolute shame given the quality of his work, but necessary given the health concerns which precipitated his exit from the pipe world. That said, estates are now the only way to acquire his work, work such as this handsome Tomato, a shape which we've never seen before from the artisan. As a Tomato, this pipe prioritizes the presence of the bowl and its shaping, placing it at the forefront of attention while the shank and stem taper away in a gentle arc out back. The transition is wide and open, providing plenty of room to drape a thumb as the shank lifts to greet the demurely curved cumberland stem, the pair's compressed, ovoid shaping lending them a svelte look in profile while keeping the aerial view a bit stouter. The bowl sits atop a rounded heel that extends out a bit at the middle, enhancing the body of this piece and lending the undercurve here a plunging outline. A low-set waistline informs the curved taper to the rim, and the overt roundness of the squat bowl lends the piece a wonderfully comfortable feel in hand, the bowl doing well to showcase some lovely ring grain beneath the stummel's virgin sandblast.
