American Estates: Alex Florov Smooth Blowfish (2017) Tobacco Pipe

The Blowfish shape is endlessly interesting, its combination of asymmetrical elements of constant fascination, and few can execute more intricately beautiful renditions than Alex Florov. Here we find a moderately sized piece, able to sit stably, albeit at an angle. That sitting capability is due to the paneled underside and the crisp ridgelines of the flanks. The Blowfish shape generally includes domed sides, but here, Alex has stylized that treatment with curvature introducing crisp ridgelines.

The forward panel of the bowl is slimmer than that of the far side, though it's actually a single panel that traverses the rim and carries on down the forward edge of the pipe, curving to the left as it does so. The shank is likewise asymmetrical, its end angled to the left and softly domed. A vulcanite saddle stem emerges from the shank-end and is itself wonderfully curved, offering a comfortable posture. Dressed in a rich walnut stain, the stummel boasts perfectly oriented birdseye and cross grain around its fine panels. This piece is a remarkable rendition of a difficult shape, made to look easy and natural under the elevated craftsmanship of a profoundly talented carver.
