American Estates: Alex Florov Smooth Wild Cherry with Ivorite (2021) (Unsmoked) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-009-18425

Alex Florov, before immigrating to the United States, restored furniture for a museum in his native country of Russia. That job gave him experience working with tools and handing delicate materials, and unknowingly primed him for his future career as a pipe maker. After settling in Chicago, Florov worked as an industrial designer for a number of years until, in 2004, his father-in-law challenged him to make a pipe. Since then, Florov has committed himself to the craft, and he produces a number of unique shapes like this Wild Cherry.

Unique, stylish, and all together charming, this piece is quite compact, measuring less than five inches from bowl to bit. The reserved length means this piece is incredibly lightweight and perfect for on-the-go smoking. Shape-wise, it features a plump, softly rounded bowl that flares subtly from its lifted heel to its high-set waistline. The bowl's rounded contours are sharply contrasted by a structural ridgeline that wraps around the one side of the shank. The shank itself is a soft oval that flares from the low-set transition into a slender saddle stem of jet-black vulcanite. A warm, traditional smooth finish dresses the stummel and highlights an impressive showing of grain about the bowl.
