American Estates: Scott Klein Sandblasted Sphinx with Black Bamboo (2015) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-009-18478
Like the Elephant's Foot, the Sphinx is an old Bo Nordh shape that has since become a staple in artisan pipe making, with many carvers putting their own creative spin on the design. This rendition from Scott Klein perfectly captures the shape's defining ridgeline, which here bifurcates the bowl and emphasizes the fore wall's rounded aspect. The aft side of the bowl slopes into the transition, drawing further attention to the pointed heel and the fore wall's raised stance. A slender shank ebbs forth from the low-set transition before giving way to four knuckles of warm bamboo. Each knuckle of bamboo is evenly spaced, creating a visual rhythm from the transition to the shoulders of the cumberland saddle stem. A dark sandblast dresses the stummel and highlights striking birdseye across the front of the bowl.
