American Estates: Cardinal House Hollingsworth Smooth Rhodesian with Bakelite (C19) (Unsmoked) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-009-18514
Cardinal House pipes are made by Walt Cannoy, a respected artisan whose experience in the craft goes back to the 1990s. Each of Cannoy's pipes are completely hand made and hand finished, and the Cardinal House line was specifically created to offer all of these features in a series that included artful shaping at a reasonable price. The Rhodesian presented here is a rather compact example from the series that additionally demonstrates some playful exaggeration about its proportions which places the bowl at the forefront of focus. Said bowl sits atop a rounded heel and flares out to a mid-set waist marked by a pair of crisp beadlines, tapering, then, to a rim crowned with craggy plateau. The flare here is striking, increasing the breadth of the bowl to more than two inches, and the bowl itself takes on a dynamic forward cant as it pushes out of the wide transition. An extremely trim shank starts a gentle taper which runs through the base of the stem, with the stem itself being a sleek stretch of brindled blue and black vulcanite. The junction is marked by a matching brindled accent which has been split by a broad band of Bakelite, the materials doing well to starkly contrast the dark contrast stain of the stummel.-John McElheny
