American Estates: Cardinal House Hollingsworth Smooth Brandy with Horn (E21) (Unsmoked) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-009-18515
Cardinal House pipes are made by Walt Cannoy, a respected artisan whose experience in the craft goes back to the 1990s. Each of Cannoy's pipes are completely hand made and hand finished, and the Cardinal House line was specifically created to offer all of these features in a series that included artful shaping at a reasonable price. This straight Brandy is a lovely example of his work, and presents with a vibrant color palette that draws the eye immediately. Quite the svelte pipe, this design places nearly all of the visual weight on the bowl and its Stack-like presence at the fore, its striking height belying the rather demure nature of its breadth. A low-set waistline lends this bowl a solid base for the iconic taper of this shape, one which manifests as a very gentle diminution along a straight line to the inward-sloping rim, its deceptively simple look keeping the feel in hand comfortable while elevating its aesthetics elegantly. The shank here pushes out from a wide, open transition with plenty of room left to drape a digit, tapering as it makes its way toward a band of black vulcanite that marks the location of a domed fitment of horn and matches the stem material. Said stem is extremely slender, more so than the shank, and this step down in girth draws the eye toward the aft end of this piece a bit, though the vibrant orange stain of the stummel pulls it back, revealing bountiful birdseye on either flank of the bowl.-John McElheny
