American Estates: J.T. Cooke Sandblasted Rhodesian (2016) (Unsmoked) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-009-19736

J.T. Cooke got his start carving pipes in 1975, working alongside artisans like Elliott Nachwalter and Brad Pohlmann at The Briar Workshop in Vermont. Throughout his long career, Cooke has crafted pipes for many companies and has restored plenty as well. Today, Cooke pursues his personal pipe making style exclusively under his own name. Cooke predominantly makes classic shapes, with the iconic Billiard being one of his personal favorites. Furthermore, Cooke is best known for his extraordinary sandblasts, which showcase thick growth rings with astounding detail.

When laying eyes on a J.T. Cooke pipe, one's eyes are instantly drawn to the sandblast, and the hands soon follow. Picking up this Rhodesian, it is clear why so many rave about J.T. Cooke's blasts. One can trace specific growth rings with their fingers or can rub against them perpendicularly for a thoroughly tactile sensation. Furthermore, the rippling growth rings make a terrific canvas for the vivid auburn stain, which organically undulates between dark streaks and warm outcroppings. Paired with the robust shape of the Rhodesian, the sandblast furthers the muscular appeal of this pipe.

Moreover, the shaping is excellent here as well. The plump bowl is at its widest at a high-set waistline, which is marked by dual beadlines that pierce straight through the organic sandblast. Then, the upper bowl tapers inward to the rim, adding a geometric variation to this pipe's curvaceous shaping. Furthermore, the shank continues the robust theme; it is thick and well-bent, rising to the height of the waistline before joining to the stem. Said stem is made from Cooke's hand-poured acrylic, offering a jet-black mate for the stummel's auburn stain. With a stellar sandblast and hearty shaping, few pipes can match this Rhodesian's rugged appeal.
