American Estates: Kadesh Swanson Smooth Shield with Bamboo Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-009-21056

Kadesh Swanson has been carving pipes since 2013 in the lush forests of Washington state and has learned from fellow pipe makers such as Steve Liskey, Jared Coles, and Jeff Gracik. This Shield showcases Swanson's diverse range of influences and stands out among his portfolio of organic designs. The Shield was originally a Bo Nordh shape, essentially being a modified Elephant's Foot, and usually showcases a stunning array of birdseye across its two broad fore and aft bowl panels. That's certainly the case here, with a single, wrapping ridgeline defining the panels, plunging through the flanks and lining the pronounced, spur-like heel. The shape of the bowl is also especially shield-like here, with a broad and expansive fore that stands opposed to a more pinched, tightly-knit aft side. The transition is nearly parabolic in appearance, leaving room to drape a digit, and it gives way to a short, tapering shank which is almost immediately met with two knuckles of bamboo that both extend the shank's length and afford this pipe a bit of organic charm. A demurely curved saddle stem of black vulcanite is paired to the bamboo, a flaring stem base harmonizing the look of the stem with the rhythm of the bamboo's knuckles. A warm, rich chestnut stain dresses the stummel and unveils plenty of birdseye at the fore for one to appreciate, while the bamboo introduces a wealth of contrast.
