American Estates: Michael Lindner Smooth Satori with Olivewood (Dragonfly) (4) (2009) (Unsmoked) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-009-20470
The son of a senior draftsman for General Motors, Michael Lindner grew up with an acute awareness for aesthetics. In the late 1990s, he opened up a tobacconist and soon decided to buy a lathe to incorporate pipe repairs and restorations into his business. Purchasing a few briar blocks from Mark Tinsky on a whim, he tried his hand at carving a pipe and developed a fervent passion for the craft. Lindner quickly became one of the most acclaimed American pipe makers, his naturalistic style evident in everything from his traditional shapes to inventive Freehands. Fitting with his nature oriented theme, Lindner exclusively uses organic accents such as exotic woods and mammoth ivory. Unfortunately, Lindner retired from pipe making in 2017, so his pieces are now available solely on the estate market.
The Horn is one of Michael Lindner's signature shapes, so much so that he has dubbed his unique take on the shape-chart classic the Satori. The Satori instantly catches one's eye with the strip of plateau that runs the length of the stummel, beginning at the sharp heel, flowing along the underside, and even extending onto the olivewood accent on the shank end. In similar fashion, two crisp ridges flow along the flanks before arcing rearward as they reach the bowl. Then they ascend to a pronounced point on the aft, creating a dramatic contour that resembles a cresting wave in profile. Similarly, the rim also showcases a streamlined construction, one that calls to mind an aerodynamic arrowhead. Moreover, the warm chestnut stain that dresses the stummel highlights a stunning grain pattern, as the flanks frame an alluring stretch of straight grain, while the rim abounds with broad whorls of birdseye.--Zach Podl
