American Estates: E. Wilke Smooth Bulldog Tobacco Pipe

A stout, squat iteration of the classic Bulldog shape, this pipe from the Edwin Wilke brand is a handsome one, complete with the form's iconic diamond paneling through the shank and stem. The shank itself tapers very slightly out of the wide transition, meeting a sleek saddle stem of jet-black vulcanite which does well to focus more of the visual weight on the fore. The bowl sits atop a rather firm heel, growing walls that flare as they rise to a high-set waist marked by twin beadlines, followed by a domed taper to the rim. The bowl's squatness is impressive, especially thanks to its more pronounced breadth, and this lends it a robust feel in hand and places further emphasis on the fore of this piece. Dressed in a warm mahogany stain, the stummel here showcases handsome grain throughout.
