American Estates: Scott Klein Smooth Bent Dublin (2017) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-009-20806

Scott Klein's background lies in the trades, and not just one, as he has had his hand in the fields of plumbing, construction, automotive technology and others. After his education in these fields, he worked for six years in various other trades, before he was introduced to Alex Florov. Florov introduced him to the world of artisan pipe making and he was immediately enamored with the process, and, as it turns out, Florov saw potential in him, something that led to Klein's spending five years working alongside Alex, skipping the usual beginnings of pipe kits and delving into artisan carving with raw blocks and vulcanite blanks.

Though this sort of flow and gesture is well on display amongst Scott Klein's body of work, it's been a while since we've seen this sort of floral, graceful bent Dublin from him, the shape itself being a rare one. It's a style that Scott handles beautifully, balancing both the lively sense of implied motion with a good deal of substance, along with a softened sense of shaping about the broad rim. Scott's left a good bit of smooth-finished plateau towards the aft of the rim, complemented by even more of it on the shank face, making for a handsomely organic look that's understated, but not expressly subtle. The shank itself is framed at the flanks by a pair of ridges, following the briar from the shank face to the rim and surrounding the lenticular face. Said face features an asymmetrical, dipped shaping that lends it a dynamic look, and this look has been reinforced by the shaping of this pipe's black vulcanite saddle stem, as its base has been carved to match the flow of the shank face almost exactly. Dressed in a warm, rich chestnut stain, the stummel here showcases plenty of handsome grain, with flame surrounding the bowl and running up the shank.
