American Estates: Clarence Mickles Smooth Bent Apple (2000) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-009-39191

An American pipe carver from Park Forest, Illinois, Clarence Mickles was affectionately known as "The Mechanic" thanks to his expertise in pipe repair and background as an auto mechanic. Mickles was known as an inventive carver who was highly regarded for his use of rustication and often large pieces. Though he passed away in 2001, Mickles' legacy lives on through his work, with this bent Apple being a good example of the more subtly neoclassical elements of his carving style. The outline here is wonderfully sinuous, with a full-bodied bowl up front displaying a wealth of rounded curves that are sure to offer comfort in the hand. A wide transition gives way to a lifting shank that tapers into a smartly curved stem of jet-black vulcanite, the pair's stature lending the pipe a lovely smoking posture. Dressed in a warm auburn stain, the stummel is finished smooth, revealing a wealth of handsome grain throughout the briar.
