American Estates: Maigurs Knets Smooth Freehand (2017) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-009-30737

Latvian-born Maigurs Knets grew up with art, drawing and sculpting for much of his childhood and, though he had found other hobbies, art has remained his passion throughout his life. After service as a border guard, he enrolled in art college, earning degrees in Antique Furniture Restoration, Wood Carving, and Sculpting, after which point he emigrated to the United States in 1990. After arriving, he found work as a modeler for the toy, industrial design, and hobby sectors, finding success, though not able to express his artistic inclination for 20 years. Through pipes, however, he found his passion rekindled, stoked into a blaze which finds him creating sculptural works of functional art that are innovative, beautiful, and smoke excellently.

This Freehand is a signature style of design from Knets, and it's one of the most overtly sculptural designs that we've ever seen from the artisan, and its organic, naturalesque inspiration is immediately apparent even at a glance. I'm instantly reminded of a leaf or flower-covered branch when I look at this pipe, the outline stretching out to more than eight inches long and boasting an extremely complex array of wrapping ridgelines that cover the entirety of the stummel. These ridges create a floral, petal-like structure at the face of the shank, the face itself separated from the main stummel by a broad accent of vulcanite before marrying to a stylized stem of the same material. A single ridge surrounds the front half of the stummel, its ends marked by a defined lift, especially near the shank, where it creates a thin, flattened outcropping of briar that further enhances the organicism of this pipe. At the fore, the bowl flares out as it rises from the ridge-wrapped base, expanding toward a massively broad rim whose asymmetrical build is dipped very low on the right side, its build displaying a blooming, floral charm. Supremely sophisticated and immensely intricate, the stummel here is finished in a rich, chestnut-hued stain that unveils birdseye on the flanks of the bowl and rim, while a band of cross grain wraps the underside, top of the shank and the underside of the rim.
