American Estates: Alex Florov Smooth Volcano Cavalier with Bamboo and Turquoise Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-009-21469
Before immigrating to the United States, Alex Florov lived in his home country of Russia and restored antique furniture for a museum, an occupation that gave him machinery experience and allowed him to work with various materials, especially wood. In 1994, he moved to the United States and worked as an industrial engineer for many years before eventually transitioning into pipe making in 2004, partly out of a desire to work with his hands and wood again. Florov is now a premier figure in the pipe world, and his work is appreciated the world over by collectors and carvers, alike. One of the few carvers to utilize hand chisels, allowing him to fashion extra-crisp ridgelines and panels, Florov crafts distinctive and highly sculptural shapes, like this Volcano Cavalier.
The Cavalier is an exceptionally artful shape, one that consists of a bowl suspended by a scaffolding of shank and stem. The shank extends through the transition and comes to a defined foot below the bowl. This rendition from Florov is fully functioning, meaning that the foot can be removed, allowing for excess moisture to be drained from the airway. The bowl here most closely resembles a Volcano, what with its ridgeline-wrapped base and steady upward taper to its taut rim. The foot enables the composition to sit stably without the aid of a stand, which is a testament to the form's well-balanced proportions and precise shaping. The steeply curved saddle stem offers a comfortable smoking posture and features a lopsided expansion ring near its base that mirrors the asymmetrical ridgeline around the bowl's base, creating a touch of visual harmony between bowl and stem.
Dressed in a glossy, auburn-hued smooth finish, the stummel showcases tight strands of flame grain that rise in concert with the bowl's taper, accentuating the briar's shaping along the way. Knuckles of bamboo adorn either end of the shank, at both the start of the stem and the start of the foot. The warm, natural material adds a touch of organicism to the composition that really captures the eyes and draws attention to either end of the Cavalier's structure. Small beads of turquoise are fixed to the bamboo's nodes and add further visual flourish to the composition.
