American Estates: ***Larry Roush Sandblasted Zulu with Silver (S3) (2484) (2019) Tobacco Pipe

Based on all the Larry Roush pipes we've received, both new and through the estate market, one of the very few traditional Zulus we've ever received from the esteemed American carver. This particular pipe is a unique one, made from a special batch of old-stock briar that Larry had in his workshop for well over a decade. Both the smaller size of these blocks as well as Roush's admiration for factory-made English and French classics of old inspired him to fashion this pipe, one defined by its smaller size compared to Larry's typical fare and a strong leaning toward Anglo-French shape chart standards.

This piece is a take on the Zulu/Yachtsman design that balances its elegant S-curve with hearty proportions through the transition and bowl. Though smaller of overall size, the shank's flare into the bowl and the stummel's generous amount of briar are conventions of Larry's work, making for a shape that's substantial in hand while still remaining surprisingly lightweight. About a Group 4 in size, it's all dressed in one of Roush's expert sandblasts, dark-stained to highlight the flashy, filigree ring of sterling silver that the carver also fashioned himself. Practically speaking, it sits sturdily upright and offers a generous chamber, all in a formal presentation. It's a rare piece from Roush, making it perfect for any collection of the American's work or as a first-time piece for a new collector.
