American Estates: Custombilt Carved Bulldog (Replacement Stem) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-009-21499
Originally founded as "Custom-Bilt" in 1934 by Tracey Mincer, the company name would later change to "Custombilt" in 1946. The American marque would become known for their signature spot-carving method, dressing their pipes with sections of fine perforations and a series of deep grooves, and the technique is showcased handsomely here. This Bulldog from Custombilt renders the classic shape with Canadian-like proportions, making for a considerably lengthy interpretation. A squat, rotund bowl sits up front, with thick walls flaring broadly from the heel toward a pair of beadlines, which mark a quick taper to the rim. Transitioning from the bowl is a protracted, muscular diamond that pairs to an abbreviated saddle stem. Custombilt's spot-carving lends the stummel a varied textural palette, all dressed in a fetching chestnut stain.
