American Estates: J. Alan Smooth Bent Brandy with Ivorite (1927) (2022) (Unsmoked) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-009-21399
When it comes to pipe making, Jeff Gracik of J. Alan pipes has long held status as one of the most talented artisans in North America, a reputation that now extends to the entire world, with expertly fashioned pieces such as this bent Brandy making it easy to see why. Quite gestural in shape, showing ample evidence of Danish design influence, it displays a plump bowl with a lifted heel and distinct cheeking at the transition. The line work wraps from the forward edge of the rim all the way around the heel and up the shank in one uninterrupted curve, creating a profile that is beyond sleek. The shank is round, pinched at the transition, and flares uniformly as it curls upward toward sleek Ivorite accent ring. Hand-cut vulcanite forms the mouthpiece, with an extra-trim base that accentuates the diminution to the button.
Gracik's masterful briar shaping skills are on full display, bringing out the vertical grain in this rendition beautifully, with stunning flame grain climbing the bowl and a myriad of dense birdseye resplendent on the heel and the underside of the shank. Jeff has employed a smooth finish and warm traditional stain to excellent effect, making the grain stand out even from across the room.
