American Estates: Michael Butera Royal Classic Smooth Bent Dublin (Gold) (00J) (5) (1990) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-009-22091
Michael Butera is practically a living legend of the American school ever since he began creating pipes in the 1970s and has since trained and mentored numerous artisans such as Larry Roush, Steve Weiner, and Michael Frey. Butera's pipes are always highly sought-after by collectors due to their rarity and quality. His low production numbers and strict standards also play a role as well, making pieces like this bent Dublin an absolute treat to see on the estate market. This piece is a striking and alluringly angular take on the timeless shape, one that offers just enough substance in the hand to be commanding. The transition here is wide, with enough room to drape a digit, and it gives way to a lifting, tapering shank that diminishes toward a sleek saddle stem of black vulcanite, one whose base is accented with a band of briar. Additionally, the shank and stem are lined with a quartet of firm ridges, granting this pipe some stylish muscularity. The bowl stands atop a pronounced heel and grows forward-urging walls that flare out toward a broad, plateau-crowned rim while nicely insulating the ample chamber. The lines of this pipe draw the eye toward the bowl, and the stummel's finish ensures the bowl is covered in beautiful grain, with a dense band of flame wrapping around its walls.
