American Estates: LHS Special Make Carved Panel (2) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-009-22298
L&H Stern Smoking Pipes & Holders, better known as LHS, was founded by Ludwig Stern in 1893, though it was reorganized in 1911 with his brother Hugo into the pipe making marque we know today. In their time, LHS made a number of successful lines that expanded their reach across the world, and they were recognized as one of the primary suppliers of pipes for U.S. troops in World War II. LHS closed down in the 1960s after more than half a century of operation, though their pipes remain on the estate market, including pieces like this Panel. The transition is wide and the shank is round, extending out to meet a sleek saddle stem of black vulcanite, one that extends the reach of this piece to nearly seven inches. Up front, the bowl stands on a firm, pronounced heel that supports thick, tall walls overlooked by a domed rim. These walls are framed by a series of firm panels, which offer a substantial feel in hand and a place to showcase the stummel's craggy carving.
