American Estates: J. Alan Smooth Horn with Boxwood (944) (2014) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-009-22645
Crafted by Jeff Gracik, J. Alan pipes combine the flowing, gestural lines of the Danish carving style with the muscular yet compact proportions of American pipe making. With its fluid profile, concise proportions, and hearty form, this Horn is an excellent example of the artisan's style.
The flanks of the bowl remain taut and reserved, while the fore of the bowl urges forward, extending the line established by the flowing shank-and-stem arrangement. The seamless, flowing composition is what earns this piece its Horn title, yet the voluminous, plateau-crowned rim lends the bowl a Dublin-like flare in profile. Hearty tendrils of flame grain engulf the bowl, while birdseye peppers the top and bottom of the shank. These gorgeous grain patterns are accentuated by a stunning contrast stain, which makes an excellent backdrop for the boxwood accent band encircling the end of the shank. With its fluid composition, dynamic grain, and natural accent, this piece is sure to appeal to those who prefer pipes with an organic aesthetic.
