Abe Herbaugh: Sandblasted Incubus
Product Number: 002-614-0071
This Incubus shape from Abe Herbaugh takes a tighter-knit approach to the design than we've seen previously, its rim coming up even with the shank-end, while the lines of its bend curl through the shank to give the piece an almost Blowfish-like sense of flow and subtle pinch. Compared to Todd Johnson's more languid interpretations, this piece seems bundled with energy, rather than having a forward-thrust aesthetic, as if it could explode into movement at any moment. Abe's eye for detail is on display here as well, with a crisp, low-profile sandblast offering up tight whorls of blasted birdseye, as well as some neatly-stacked growth rings that just peek through to offer a mild texture. The dark stain is similarly crisp, with a red-hued undertone for a hint of the classic aesthetic that informs so many of Abe's pieces. Excellent work all around.
