Abe Herbaugh: Sandblasted Mushroom

Product Number: 002-614-0079

Abe Herbaugh's shaping style tends toward the organic, and this Mushroom shape is no exception. While the broad, lenticular shank offers structure, the transition is kept soft and subtle, allowing the upward sweep of the bowl to feel quite fluid. At the rim the piece's namesake is evoked, with a crisp line dividing the lower bowl from the gentle bevel of the rim, giving the impression of a mushroom's natural cap, though without some of the overhang that we might see on briars from other carvers. The clean lines of the piece are continued through the finish, featuring a low-profile sandblast that offers a subtle texture, as well as a hint at the briar's underlying growth rings — while a warm contrast stain brings out licks of flame grain at the flanks quite dramatically.
