Abe Herbaugh: Smooth Mushroom
Product Number: 002-614-0082
We've only seen Abe Herbaugh's Mushroom design once before but never in a smooth finish. In form, it's a highly organic piece, combining elements of the Dublin and Horn shapes. With a slightly bent stem, the S-curve sweeps fluidly from bit to rim, interrupted only by the negative space made by the saddle stem. Such a graceful underside and gentle transition allow this piece to fit sublimely in hand despite its relatively compact proportions. The gentle curves contrast well against the sharp ridgeline just below the inflated rim, giving the profile a sense of firmness to parallel the stem base. Abe has left the color palette rather traditional here, dressing the stummel in a warm, chestnut contrast stain and pairing it to a classic, jet-black mouthpiece. It's expertly crafted to show off the briar's grain in the most natural way: cross grain along the flanks and birdseye fore and aft. Beautiful work all around from the American carver.-Truett Smith
