Abe Herbaugh: Sandblasted Oval Shank Billiard with Boxwood
Product Number: 002-614-0097
Among his more wild and organic Fish and Mushroom forms, Abe Herbaugh's classic pieces stand out in beautiful, traditional style, and personally, I'm always delighted when they come our way. Per Herbaugh conventional design cues, this Billiard caters to Danish shaping — the bowl softly rounded and slightly tapered compared to the more straight, upright stance of English renditions, while the rim is slightly inflated and smooth of finish to contrast the rest of the stummel's crisp sandblast. Said sandblast is stained in a striking contrast, the contrast sandblast being a technique invented by American carver Jody Davis and has since expanded across the pipemaking world, utilized by the likes of Jeff Gracik of J. Alan pipes and Vladimir Grechukhin. The aesthetic makes for a striking presentation that still maintains a rustic, reserved disposition. A rather compact piece overall, it features an oval shank that draws the eye toward the bowl and streamlines the profile overall. For an accent, Abe adorned the stem base with a hearty section of boxwood, standing out starkly in contrast to the rust red-tinged stain.-Truett Smith
