Abe Herbaugh: Sandblasted Apple with Silver

Product Number: 002-614-0112

I always appreciate when pipe makers fashion "sibling pipes" — or at least that's what I call them, for lack of a better phrase — pipes that are similar in shape and size to others the artisan has made, but with slight differences to make each iteration unique. This Apple from Abe Herbaugh is one such "sibling pipe," related to an Apple we previously received from the American carver. Both are virtually identical in form, proportions, and dimensions, exuding plump muscularity and offering compact, lightweight appeal. Both also wear a sandblasted finish and feature a mount-style stem configuration. Here, though, that mount is of flashy sterling silver, while the former bore one of boxwood. My favorite aspect, however, and what truly defines these two pipes as "siblings" is how Abe approached each accent. He carved the base of the accent into a tight ridgeline for a subtle hint of rigidity. This cue, then, is balanced by the slight indentation around the stem base — the protruding ridge of the accent filling the negative space along the stem. It's a stunning feat of visual balance and compositional, aesthetic beauty.
