Abe Herbaugh: Smooth Bulldog Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-614-0191

American pipe maker Abe Herbaugh originally worked as an electric guitar builder and repair expert before lending his talents to pipe making. From starting out carving pre-cut blocks of briar to later learning artisan techniques, Herbaugh collected a wealth of pipe-making experience that shaped him into an exceptional craftsman. Herbaugh's designs often draw comparisons to the supple aesthetics of the Danish school, and many of his pipes feature a pronounced forward-urging dynamism.

This Bulldog exemplifies Abe Herbaugh's affinity for Danish aesthetics, as he employs many shaping cues that hint at influences from such artisans as Former, Sixten Ivarsson, and Jess Chonowitsch. The bowl here is exceptionally supple, its bulb-like walls bulging outward at a taut waistline and tapering to the rim and heel respectively. However, the bowl also features several crisp accoutrements, such as the sharp heel, the dual beadlines on the waist, and a chamfered rim, all of which imbue the softly contoured bowl with a palpable structure. Out back, the thin diamond shank continues the muscular motif, but its lithe demeanor, along with the lean saddle stem, manifests a nimble and neat profile. Moreover, the stummel is dressed in a smoky walnut smooth finish, highlighting tightly packed whorls of birdseye across the stummel's flanks, which are divided by a slim stretch of sweeping cross grain.
