Abe Herbaugh: Sandblasted Stout Bent Egg with Silver Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-614-0203

Throughout his well-over-a-decade long career as an artisan pipe maker, Abe Herbaugh has developed myriad designs that have become recognized as distinctly his own, often reinterpreting well-known shapes with a certain signature flair. Throughout 2024, the American carver began experimenting with a specific bent Egg iteration that maintained much of the form's characteristic features but with a compact and plump stoutness. It's a design that beautifully balances substance and muscularity with refinement and elegance — aspects that are often viewed as contrasting and dichotomous.

This particular example is the first we've received from Herbaugh, and it exemplifies the design's inherent juxtaposition. Despite the bowl and shank's combined stoutness, the profile remains dynamic and lithe through the lines' forward-urging momentum. Moreover, the inclusion of a trim silver ring — hand-spun by Herbaugh himself — enhances the motif: Slender accents have a slimming motif when paired to proportionally robust stummels. For compositional balance, Herbaugh hand-cut the stem to feature intricate ridges along the base, mirroring the shape of the silver ring and adding complexity to the piece as it contrasts the comparatively reserved bowl.
